It was a super weekend!

Most people think of this past weekend as super because of the Super Bowl and the Giants’ upset of the Patriots. Well, it also was super because of the Academic Challenge Invitational for our elementary students, hosted by Tates Creek High School.

Nearly 220 teams from 32 Fayette County public schools competed. More than 1,300 kids and about 2,500 parents and community leaders were there. Principals, parents, school board members and others volunteered their time to serve our children.

The competition was intense, and we congratulate Meadowthorpe Elementary School team B in topping the intermediate division and Squires Elementary team C in winning the primary division! (View a list of winners.)

For those who might not know, the Academic Challenge gives all elementary students in the district an opportunity to join a team at their school and then participate in three competitions: the One Community One Voice Invitational, the Principal’s Cup and the Superintendent’s Cup. College scholarships are awarded to the intermediate and primary winners of the Superintendent’s Cup.

Our kids did a great job at the Invitational this past weekend. As I watched the faces of our students as they competed, it gave me goose bumps. To see them so focused on academics on a Saturday morning with more than 2,500 people there to support them was no less than amazing!

I would like to personally thank chairman Arnold Gaither, project consultant Karolyn Kell and all the members of OCOV for the vision for this event. I also want to thank all of our parents, staff, board members and community volunteers for helping make this event so very special.

It also was a pretty super weekend as more than 150 middle school students participated in the 25th annual local MATHCOUNTS competition.

Lexington Traditional Magnet School won first place, Beaumont Middle took second, Winburn was third, Morton came in fourth, and Edythe J Hayes Middle finished sixth. (View a list of winners.)

Students from the top two teams, LTMS and Beaumont, will participate in the state competition March 7-8 in Louisville.

Let’s offer all our students hearty congratulations for their spirit of competition and academic success!

March 7 also a weather make-up day
Thanks to a dose of wintry weather that prompted a school closing Jan. 22, Fayette County Public School students will now attend school on Friday, March 7. This is in addition to the Friday, Feb. 15 weather make-up date for students and staff. Both dates previously were scheduled as a “No School” day for kids, but they also were set aside as possible weather make-up days.

S-U-P-E-R day for Sam!

Wow, can you believe it? A day devoted to soup in a bowl! Now that is my kind of day!Sam

Sunday, we had some family over our house for two reasons. One was because it was my sister’s (Kristyn) birthday, and the other was for soup in a bowl. I loved it – there were people watching football on TV and giving me all the snacks I wanted. They not only had soup; they had dips, chips and desserts.

Dad tried to explain that this was not about food. He said it was about this big football game and new commercials on TV. I am not sure what Dad was talking about because what I saw was a lot of FOOD, and I was as happy as I could be!

Let’s do soup in the bowl every weekend!

Bow wow…

Availability vs. Self-Centeredness - Making my own schedule and priorities secondary to the wishes of those I serve.
  • I will put others ahead of myself.
  • I will find a way to help, not a way to hide.
  • I will be ready when I'm called.
  • I will be glad for the chance to serve.
  • I will check with the right person before I make commitments.
